This is how prayer can keep Jesus company as a beloved friend

Sometimes, prayer can feel dry and can quickly turn into a bland routine that consists of reciting words in order to get something from God. Instead of taking prayer as a way to acquire blessings from God, try to look at it as a way to develop your relationship with God.

Remember to think often on God, every day and night, in your business, and even in your diversions. Because, he is always near you and with you; do not leave Him alone. I believe you would think it rude to leave a friend who came to visit you all alone: why then must God be neglected?

Do not forget about God, but think on Him often, adore Him continually, live and die with Him; for this is the glorious employment of a Christian; in a word, this is our profession, even if we do not know it we must learn it.

This image of prayer is consistent with the experience of Jesus in the garden, (Matthew 26:40) “When he returned to his disciples he found them asleep. He said to Peter, ‘So you could not keep watch with me even for an hour?”

Similarly, God asks us every day to spend time with him. Or wouldn’t we want to spend time with him if he is our best friend? Although, he is.

Let’s endeavor to spend more time with God and to think of him often, even when we are doing the most difficult activities.

Because, God is always there, waiting until us to turn toward him
